The Liminal Space:

The narrative almost floats along as it follows the interweaving lives of four narrators - at first seemingly unconnected. As far as storytelling goes this is a beautifully expressive piece with a dream-like quality to it. Each of the narrators capture the heart as much as the mind. The type of book you find yourself drawn to at every opportunity. This really is one of those novels that you can read in a day because of the drawing in that McRae is able to achieve through her writing style. It is a joy to read.

I loved this book. It is written with a simplicity of tone and a grace that made me think of the people within its pages in between readings. There is a purity and goodness to it, even in the midst of some awful life events, an acceptance of humanity's frailty that is heartening. It's a gem.

The Scent of Apples
"An exquisitely told first novel from this New Zealand Author...McRae has a talent for getting inside the mind of a young girl - and her writing has all the bitter-sweetness of those cider apples "
- Isobel Marriner and Sue Baxalle, Canvas Magazine, 2011
